Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for air cleaning operations
   • Access, interpret and apply air cleaning compliance documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for the activity.
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency.
   • Select, and check for faults, equipment/tools for work activities. Identify, address and report potential hazards, risks and environmental issues.
   • Select approved dust suppression and extraction methods and ensure area is well ventilated before entry.
2. Start-up equipment in sequence
   • Perform equipment pre-start checks to ensure equipment is ready for operation
   • Carry out start-up procedures and complete start-up checks according to plant configurations and system requirements
   • Confirm plant is operational
3. Operate and monitor equipment
   • Read and interpret data from equipment indicators to determine air cleaning efficiency
   • Inspect operations/plant and catchment areas to identify air cleaning process defects and potential problems
   • Adjust equipment to approved operating parameters to optimise and maintain efficient air cleaning and to meet product quality targets
   • Add any required reagents to approved operating parameters
   • Carry out minor maintenance tasks to maintain condition of equipment
   • Complete all required written documentation clearly, concisely and on time
   • Communicate end of shift information verbally or in writing to oncoming shift
4. Shutdown in sequence and/or isolate equipment.
   • Shutdown or isolate equipment based on process and safety requirements
   • Perform post shutdown or isolation checks
5. Conduct housekeeping activities
   • Clean, check, maintain and store tools and equipment

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable, documentation, policies and procedures

implements requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective Conduct air cleaning activities including:

performing pre-start checks

carry out sampling

diagnosing faults, identifying and addressing hazards

selecting and using lifting equipment (manual, cranes and loads)

using and selecting appropriate hand and power tools

works effectively with others to undertake and complete air cleaning activities that meets all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others

maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating to confirm work/plans/specifications

passing on end of shift information

demonstrates completion of conducting air cleaning activities that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

performing correct sequencing for starting up equipment

correctly operating and monitoring equipment including:

inspecting operations/plant and catchment areas

adjusting equipment to maintain efficient air cleaning

determining operating parameters and adding reagents

performing minor maintenance

performing isolation checks and shutdown in sequence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in conducting air cleaning activities through:

accessing, interpreting and applying the organisation and site requirements and procedures for:

identifying and managing risks, hazards and hazardous goods

isolation and breakdown procedures and responsibilities

complying with work health and safety practices

applying pumping system and flow charts (pipeline and sprinkler systems)

applying site procedures

applying site safety requirements

applying wet and dry working procedures

selecting and checking for faults, tools and equipment to carry out tasks

diagnosing faults and report defects

interpreting reports and maintain records

identifying contaminant

identifying and complying with equipment limitations and operating parameters

complying with hazardous goods procedures and consequences of spills and hazardous goods

identifying repair requirements

interpreting and applying metallurgical and technical data (basic)
